Review of 2009 Season

First Call of MS Costa Atlantica

After completion of the successful 2009 season with 87 vessels and a total of 126,000 passengers, CCCB began immediately on preparations for 2010.

Decoration work in the terminal and optimisation of handling processes – everything has to be ready in time for the season opening on May 20.

On that day at 1 pm, MS Costa Atlantica of the Italian Costa Line will make its first call at Bremerhaven's Columbus Quay.

The Costa Atlantica will be completing its transatlantic voyage from New York. In doing so, it will be carrying on a more than 180 year-old tradition. Since its foundation in 1827, more than 7 million emigrants have left for America from the Columbus Quay. After World War II, Bremerhaven became the most important supply port for the American forces based in Europe. Vessels such as the "United States", "America" and the North German Lloyd liners used Bremerhaven to start and end their voyages across the Atlantic .

Vesseltracker at CCCB

Vesseltracker is a ship tracking system which enables users to monitor the position of vessels at sea and on canals. The central component of Vesseltracker is a Google Maps application which shows the ship's exact position. The tracking of individual vessels is made possible by the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which allows suitably equipped vessels to transfer such vital data as position, course and speed in real time via two VHF channels.

Waiting passengers can now follow the movements of various vessels on a large screen in the CCCB café – an interesting way for travellers to pass the time in addition to watching activities in the terminal itself.

CCCB wins innovation award

CCCB was recently awarded the nationally prestigious innovation prize of the German Association of Trade and Logistics (BGHW).

BGHW is the organisation responsible for monitoring compliance with work safety regulations at CCCB. Every year it awards a prize for the best "Innovation in Accident Prevention" projects in Germany.

Wilfried Probst, CCCB's Operations Manager, and Work Safety Officer, Klaus Macke entered the competition with a landing platform they developed specifically for CCCB.

The flexible landing platform allows a more effective and safer handling of provisions for cruise vessels in tidal ports.

Wilfried Probst, responsible for the technical execution of the idea, commented as follows: "We are pleased to have won this prize for Bremerhaven and will continue to do everything we can to guarantee work safety at our terminal, so that Bremerhaven will always bring good luck to cruise vessels."
